Bubbles

Blogging from my bookish hideout at Oxford Public Library...

Loving LIS 7340!

A classmate in my collection development class, taught by Dr. Robert Holley, raised a really good discussion point: due to the customization and personalization of the current Internet environment, she is unlikely to stumble upon books and materials outside of her interest. Think: Amazon.Com's recommendations. (An interesting concept!)

My classmate's point got me thinking about an interesting link that Dr. Scout Calvert shared a few weeks ago, via the SLIS listserv, to a presentation by Eli Pariser titled "Beware online 'filter bubbles'." TEDTalks describes the presentation:
As web companies strive to tailor their services (including news and search results) to our personal tastes, there's a dangerous unintended consequence: We get trapped in a "filter bubble" and don't get exposed to information that could challenge or broaden our worldview. Eli Pariser argues powerfully that this will ultimately prove to be bad for us and bad for democracy.

Take a moment to check it out...

(Thank you, Scout!)
