Library of Michigan

Yesterday, thanks to the American Library Association (Wayne State University chapter), I toured the Library of Michigan, State Law Library, and the Martha W. Griffiths Rare Book Room. The beautiful spring day made for an incredibly enjoyable with the moon roof open. I was pleasantly surprised by how easy it was to get there and park. In fact, I am tempted to add this library to my list of "study locations"...

Through conducting library visits, I have identified a keen interest in library architecture and layout. With that said, I was impressed by the Library of Michigan and how they chose to incorporate natural Michigan elements into the construction of the building, such as: limestone, copper, oak, and granite. It really gave the library an earthy feel that was easy on the eyes while creating a relaxing environment.

The staff was friendly and enthusiastic -- very open to questions and tailored the tour to our individual interests. I was very impressed by the reference collection and wish that I would have visited the library for LIS 6120: Access to Information (Dr. Anghelescu) last fall, particularly for the encyclopedia project.

Here is a link to an online album containing photos from the tour:
